What is Verification?

The purpose for setting these standards is to enable more choice for providers in selecting the virtual care solution that best meets their care delivery needs, while ensuring clinical encounters are secure and patient privacy is protected.

Ontario Health’s provincial standard for virtual visit solutions is intended to ensure that virtual care services are delivered using safe, secure and interoperable platforms. The standard helps vendors and health service providers with their approaches to offering and delivering safe and secure virtual care.

Benefits of Using Verified Solutions

  • Confidence in virtual care solutions that meet provincial privacy, security, interoperability, and technical requirements
  • Safeguarding of patient Personal Health Information (PHI)
  • Physicians are encouraged to use verified solutions when delivering video visits using the temporary virtual care fee codes (‘K-codes’) to submit claims to protect the safety and privacy of providers and patients.

The Standard

Applying Ontario Health's standards for virtual visits, virtual care services can be delivered using safe, secure, and interoperable platforms. These were developed in consultation with health care organizations and clinicians across the province.

Please note: As the provincial standards evolve, vendors will be re-engaged in the verification process and must ensure their solution remains compliant with current requirements of the standard. The published list of verified solutions will be refreshed accordingly.

Verified Virtual Visit Solutions

Once Verified, solutions are published on Ontario Health’s Verified Solution List to support Health Service Providers in making informed decisions regarding the selection and procurement of virtual care solutions that meet their practice needs.

Solutions are required to undergo Validation testing and to submit substantiation materials within 12 months of the date they were verified. Once validated, solution listings are updated to reflect Validated status on the Verified Solution List.

Ontario Health does not endorse any technological solution and advises health care providers and organizations to conduct their own due diligence to determine that any solution procured meets their own organizational requirements, program, and care delivery needs.

Talk to Your Vendor

Health service providers are encouraged to direct vendors to review the standard and to submit to become verified. For more details and guidance for your vendor, visit the Virtual Visits Solution Verification Process for Vendors page.

Health Service Provider Innovators

Virtual care solutions developed by or in partnership with health service providers can become verified. If you have or are planning to implement a solution that is unique to your environment and is not generally or commercially available in the marketplace, you are encouraged to contact us at verification@ontariohealth.ca to discuss eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does using a Verified solution impact my ability to receive remuneration for virtual care services?

Providers should refer their contractual requirement under which they receive remuneration to determine the details of remuneration related to virtual care and if Verification status is a recommendation or requirement. Further remuneration questions should be directed to the funder through standard channels, such as the Ministry of Health’s Service Support Contact Centre at: 1-800-262-6524.

My current virtual care solution is not on the Verified Solutions List. What do I need to do?

You should encourage your Solution Provider to visit the OH website at ontariohealth.ca/verification where information required to participate in the program is published. If you are a Health Service Provider that is participating in innovative pilot, project or program, you are encouraged to email verification@ontariohealth.ca to request a meeting to discuss options available to verify your solution.

What is the purpose of the Verified Solutions List?

The Verified Solutions List is meant to serve only as a guide for Health Service Providers in selecting and procuring verified virtual care solutions. Health Service Providers should continue to make their own independent decisions as to which solution and Solution Provider is most appropriate for their practice(s). Health Service Providers are required to perform their own due diligence to ensure compliance with the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (“PHIPA”) and other applicable laws.
