Corey Bernard Recognized for Equity and Anti-Racism Work in Public Health

In recognition of his leadership in public health, Corey Bernard, the Director of Equity, Inclusion, Diversity, and Anti-Racism at Ontario Health, has been awarded the 2024 Outstanding Black Leadership in Public Health and Health Systems Award.

Corey was nominated in part for his role in leading the development and implementation of equity-advancing strategies into health care organizations at multiple levels of the Ontario health system. In his role at Ontario Health, Corey has led key conversations and the development of transformative policies and procedures.

This marks the second time an Ontario Health staff member has received this honour, following Cynthia Damba’s recognition in 2023. The award was presented at the Black Health Leaders Awards Ceremony, an event hosted by the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health that spotlights exceptional leadership and impact in public health.

"This award is not just about me, but about the countless individuals and communities we serve. It’s a testament to their resilience, their voices and their steadfast belief in a more equitable health system."

Corey’s nomination also recognized his work outside the workplace where his commitment to serving the community is evident in his numerous volunteer-member affiliations, including the Anti-Racism External Advisory Group for the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health, the Black Health Equity Working Group and the Black Experiences in Health Care Symposium Planning Committee.

“Leadership is not confined to the walls of an organization. It is about advocating for change, engaging with the community and believing in the power of collective voices,” said Corey. “As we take a moment to acknowledge our achievements, we must remember our continuous mission to serve the community, which includes a commitment to improving the health and material conditions for the many communities that continue to experience avoidable barriers to care. Collectively, we can shape a more equitable and inclusive health care system, which is our responsibility to deliver.”

Anna Greenberg, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Ontario Health, expressed her pride in Corey receiving the award.

“We are thrilled to see Corey being recognized for his contributions to health and health systems. His work continues to inspire and drive change, and his recognition at the Black Health Leaders Awards Ceremony is a testament to his exceptional leadership and impact. We are incredibly proud to have Corey as part of our team at Ontario Health and look forward to his continued contributions in shaping a more equitable and inclusive health care system for all.”
