Mobile withdrawal management services in the Central Region support people struggling with addictions or substance use.
In May 2021, Mobile Withdrawal Management Services was launched to support individuals struggling with addictions or substance use in the Central Region. This mobile program is an innovative model of care that provides an integrated and comprehensive continuum of mental health and addictions services and links all parts of the system to each other. Ontario Health’s Central Region supports this initiative through continued funding and performance monitoring.
Partners that came together to deliver this innovative model of care include:
- Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle (BANAC)
- Mamaway WiidokdaadwinCMHA Muskoka Parry Sound
- CMHA Simcoe County
- B’Saanibamaadsiwin (Indigenous Mental Health Program)
The program is based on a bio-psycho-social-spiritual (BPSS) model. This model promotes assessment that captures the full range of underlying causes for an individual’s addictions or substance use. It uses trauma-informed approaches and harm-reduction strategies that are evidence-informed and culturally sensitive. The program also links to other systems that may be needed like the health care system, housing, criminal justice, social services, First Nations, Métis and Indigenous communities, etc.
Who does this program serve
People aged 16+ living in the community (at home or an alternate location chosen by the client) who want to detox from a substance they are using can be supported. The program addresses the impacts of substance use on an individual’s physical and mental health, social support circle, and spiritual or moral values. This model guides health workers to see and care for the whole person and recognize the impact that all aspects of someone’s life and experience have on their health and well-being. Referrals are received from primary care providers, mental health and addictions service providers, other health service providers and Indigenous health providers within North Simcoe Muskoka. Clients who identify as Indigenous and do not have a primary care provider are assisted in accessing primary care through BANAC.
All enrolled clients who identify as Indigenous will also have access to Elder and Indigenous-specific services through BANAC. Traditional healing practices are integrated throughout the care experience within a holistic worldview that emphasizes balance among one’s tradition, culture, language and community.
