Position Summary

Ontario Health is seeking expressions of interest from Ontario physicians with significant expertise in positron emission tomography (PET) scanning for the position of Ontario Lead, PET Scanning (previously titled, “Chair, PET Steering Committee”).

This is a unique opportunity to provide strategic leadership to the evolution of PET scanning in Ontario.  This opportunity is open to all qualified candidates.

Accountabilities

The key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Provide strong, visionary leadership at the provincial level for Ontario Health’s quality agenda as related to PET scanning, serving as an advocate and champion of program initiatives 
  • Provide leadership for the PET Steering Committee, ensuring the Committee fulfills its mandate 
  • Provide leadership for the PET Capital Advisory Committee, in support of Ontario Health’s role in long-term capital planning with respect to PET
  • Champion evidence-based access to PET scanning in Ontario – regardless of age or indication (e.g., inclusive of pediatric, cardiovascular and other indications), and act as spokesperson for the PET Steering Committee 
  • Establish and maintain effective links with relevant clinical communities, government, and other stakeholders at the provincial and regional levels on behalf of Ontario Health  
  • Conduct horizon and jurisdictional scans to identify and prioritize emerging areas of practice relevant to PET, including new indications and technologies.
  • Advise on policy and operations of the Ontario Health PET program as needed 
  • Identify, advise on, and respond to system-level issues (e.g., wait times and emerging pressures), as appropriate. This also includes recognizing opportunities for quality improvement, supporting the development and implementation of quality initiatives, and recommending strategies to enhance provincial PET scan services.
  • Support and advance collaboration among stakeholders, including strong collaboration with other Ontario Health programs and initiatives related to PET scanning (e.g., Ontario Cancer Leads and Cancer Advisory Committees, CorHealth)

Qualifications

  • A physician (radiologist or nuclear medicine physician) with significant expertise in PET scanning  
  • Licenced to practice in Ontario and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
  • Significant clinical and research experience in PET scanning 
  • Proven track record of clinical leadership at the hospital and/or university level 
  • Strong understanding of clinical trials development and execution is an asset 
  • Recognized as an opinion leader within the PET scanning and/or imaging community 
  • In-depth knowledge of clinical, administrative and system-wide issues with respect to PET scan services 
  • Demonstrated aptitude for systems thinking, an ability to analyze information and to make sound decisions 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build consensus 
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient-centred care, evidence-based medicine and public accountability 
  • Enthusiasm for, and commitment to, quality improvement in health care at the system level 
  • Demonstrated creativity through publication of research and/or implementation of innovative systems and ideas
