Position summary

Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network [TGLN]) is seeking expressions of interest for the position of Regional Medical Lead (RML), Donation.

This is a unique opportunity to provide strategic leadership to the evolution of the Ontario Health system. This opportunity is open to all qualified candidates.

Reporting to the Provincial Medical Director, Donation for Ontario Health (TGLN) and working closely with the clinical management team, the Regional Donation Medical Lead will promote a culture of organ and tissue donation in Ontario and support a system level approach to the planning and implementation of donation related activities. With shared accountability for hospital donation performance, this role will work at the local and provincial level to understand the needs of the medical staff and others ensuring policy/procedural issues are identified and providing education to physicians on donation leading practices. This role serves as a clinical resource, educator and advocate to improve all aspects of donation in order to maximize the opportunity for donation and transplantation. This work will be undertaken remotely, with some requirement for travel and in-person meeting attendance.

Accountabilities

  • Support donation strategy and process improvement implementation across assigned hospitals by working with Provincial Medical Director, Donation, , Senior Director, Donation Services and the Directors of Hospital Programs;
  • Manage assigned Hospital Donation Physicians (HDPs) in the function of identified HPD accountabilities, and evaluate performance, including a bi-annual plan for the optimization of hospital performance of assigned hospitals in consultation with the Directors, Hospital Programs;
  • Ensure promotion of leading practices in donation (referral, consent, death determination, and donor management) and provide expert knowledge through communication, education, consultation, direction and advice to critical care physicians, MD trainees, hospital leads, and associated healthcare professionals on provincial protocols and policies;
  • Assist in drafting and review of recommendations and policies that support the mandate of Ontario Health (TGLN) and participate in the development of required educational materials and presentations in consultation with the Physician Program Lead, Education and Hospital Development teams;
  • Foster relationships between Ontario Health (TGLN) and stakeholders, ensure effective stakeholder engagement through participation on local and provincial committees or meetings such as Hospital Organ and Tissue Donation Committees, the Donation Steering Committee and representing Ontario Health (TGLN) as required at provincial, national and international meetings and conferences;
  • Identify system level barriers or challenges and make recommendations for improvement and coordinate the on-going sharing of information and problem solving with medical leads in hospitals and Ontario Health (TGLN);
  • Work with colleagues from other regions to analyze and understand provincial practices and identify opportunities for improvement, as well as working closely with, and providing strategic advice and solutions on issues to the Provincial Medical Director, Donation;
  • Be a member of the on-call team of Donation Support Physicians to provide 24/7 on-call physician telephone support and advice for Ontario Health (TGLN) ;
    • Work with the Provincial Resource Centre, Organ and Tissue Donation Coordinator, or Manager On Call in selected cases based on identified criteria
    • Upon the request from the Ontario Health (TGLN) Provincial Resource Centre (PRC), offer directed advice on the death determinationand management of potential donors to the Most Responsible Physician (MRP) and bedside MD trainees.
    • Use Ontario Health (TGLN) provincial policies, procedures and algorithms as guidelines in providing support and advice.
    • Provide direction in the donation and transplantation process when conflict occurs between parties.
    • Provide a report to Provincial Medical Director, Donation on any cases that require a review.
  • Participate in Continuing Medical Education programs related to the practice of donation;

Qualifications

  • Practicing physician in Ontario, in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), with over 5 years clinical experience.
  • Certification in a specialty of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada, preferably in Critical Care Medicine or equivalent
  • Currently practicing Critical Care in an Ontario hospital
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of deceased organ and tissue donation in Ontario including ethical and legal aspects;
  • Ability to champion excellence using consultation, communication and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of stakeholders and develop and maintain effective clinical networks;
  • An effective communicator and educator; with experience in development and delivery of educational materials;
  • Well-developed influencing, negotiating, and consensus building skills;
  • Experience in handling media or public relations issues at a local level;
  • Understanding of Ontario's health care system, health care delivery program operations, community-based health care delivery models and related regulations;
  • Issues management and strategic orientation skills to link current actions to strategies or long-term perspective;
