Health811 Resources Help Providers Support Patients in Accessing Health Services

This respiratory illness season, share these resources with your patients to help them get health advice or find health services through Health811.

These resources can be used to:

  • support public outreach and education efforts led by your organization
  • amplify Health811’s service offerings through your existing communication channels
  • inform your network about the Health811 service

Communications Resources for Health811

To support communications featuring information about Health811, the following key messages provide an overview of the service, its features and how to access it.

  • for the French version of the service) has replaced the former Telehealth Ontario, adding enhanced online tools allowing individuals to call 811 or visit the website 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week to get health advice and help navigating health services and finding information.
  • Health811 allows people living in Ontario to call or chat online with a registered nurse and find the health care services and information they need all in one, easy-to-use website. This will help people living in Ontario avoid unnecessary visits to emergency departments and delays in accessing care.
  • Health811 can be accessed by calling 811 or visiting Health811’s website to chat online or browse its online resources at health811.ontario.ca (or health811.ontario.ca/static/fr-ca).
    • If you are living with a hearing-based disability and would like to access this service, dial 7-1-1 using your TTY device (alternately you can dial 1-800-855-0511) and ask for 811
  • health811.ontario.ca for the French version of the service) brings patients to a single source where they can easily:
    • Speak to, or chat online with, a registered nurse for health advice
    • Get help with finding a primary care provider if they don’t have one
    • Use the Symptom Assessment Tool on the website to understand their health concerns and how to access care
    • Get connected to mental health and addictions services
    • Find local health services, such as home and community care or caregiver support
    • Get connected to a specialized health professional if they have concerns about food and healthy eating, breastfeeding or how to quit smoking
    • Get general guidance through their health care journey
  • By calling 811, you can speak to a qualified health professional, such as a registered nurse, day or night, in English and French, with translation support also offered in other languages. The phone service is available in 232 languages, including Indigenous languages such as Cree, Oji-Cree, Ojibwe and Inuktitut.
  • The province will expand Health811’s features and offerings over time to better coordinate care and services to people living in Ontario. Ontario will continue to work closely with health sector partners to harness their expertise and insights on how best to enhance Health811 to better serve you.
  • Health811 is for non-urgent health care information, advice and referrals. Personal health information, shared with Health811, is secure and always protected. This service does not replace 911, which should still be used for a medical emergency.
  • Telehealth and other Ontario health care service numbers continue to operate.
    • You can call 811 or visit health811.ontario.ca to find a local doctor or nurse practitioner, support to quit smoking and a referral for vaping cessation services, nutrition counselling by a registered dietitian, breastfeeding assistance, colorectal cancer screening and refugee health supports.
