Ontario Structured Psychotherapy: Flexible Mental Health Supports That Work
The Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program offers free, flexible mental health supports for people experiencing anxiety or depression. People can begin with guided self-help and coaching, which work for many, and move to more intensive care if needed.
The Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program is helping more people in Ontario access mental health care by offering free supports that range from guided self-help and coaching to therapy with a trained professional. With this stepped approach, people can begin with supports that work for many and move to more intensive care if needed.
The program is available to adults over 18 across Ontario who are experiencing mild to moderate anxiety or depression. Using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), the program helps people build coping skills and resilience. Since its launch in 2017, more than 106,000 people have enrolled, including over 23,000 in the past year alone. Nearly half of those who completed the program reported noticeable improvements in their symptoms.
First-Step Supports
Guided self-help and coaching services are designed to be flexible and effective, offering quick access without long waits or complicated steps. These include:
- BounceBack: a virtual program with workbooks, videos and phone coaching, which has already helped thousands of people across Ontario. It breaks down barriers like cost, distance and language, offering multilingual coaching and support from trained coaches and clinical psychologists.
- Internet-based cognitive-behavioural therapy: online modules guided by a therapist, with readings and exercises to strengthen coping and resilience skills.
- Clinician-assisted bibliotherapy: a self-help guide paired with weekly 30-minute phone sessions with a therapist.
For many, these first-step supports are enough to see real improvement. A recent study found that 68% of Bounceback participants recovered from anxiety or depression after completing the program. Another study found approximately 90% of clients say BounceBack or clinician-assisted bibliotherapy help them manage life’s challenges. Many appreciate the chance to reflect independently, supported by a therapist or coach, and feel empowered to make positive changes. For those who need more help, the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy program also provides therapy in individual or group settings.
An Accessible Path to Mental Health
“By offering flexible supports such as guided self-help and coaching, the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program makes it easier for people across the province to access mental health care quickly and in ways that fit their lives,” says Dr. Karen Rowa, the program’s Provincial Clinical Lead. “When appropriate, clinicians are encouraged to discuss OSP and the range of supports available. Early guidance toward the right level of support helps ensure people can get the help they need, when and where they need it.”
Getting help for depression or anxiety-related concerns doesn’t have to mean long waits or starting with intensive treatment. By beginning with practical supports that are proven to work, people in Ontario can take the first steps toward feeling better and building lasting coping skills.
